How to make a slip knot

The slip knot is essential in the world of crochet and knitting. It allows flexibility in adjusting tension on your hook or needle. Let's dive into two methods to create the perfect slip knot.

First pinch the tail end between your thumb and forefingers, then create a 'U' shape with the working yarn. Cross the working yarn over the tail, then open the loop with your fingers. Reach through the loop and pinch the tail end. Now, without releasing the tail end, pull your fingers back through the loop and tighten the knot. You can then tighten or loosen the slip knot by pulling the tail end or by pulling the loop open.

This adjustable knot ensures your yarn glides smoothly but stays secure on the hook. On the hook, adjust the knot by pulling the working yarn to loosen it or pulling on the tail yarn to tighten it.

To remove the knot, simply pull the working yarn and the tail end apart at the same time. The knot should release, leaving your yarn just as it was before with no permanent knots.

Another way to create a slip knot is to lay the yarn flat. Then cross the working yarn over the tail, forming an 'X'. Fold the loop in half over the tail yarn. Pinch the tail end in one hand and pull the yarn through the loop with your other hand without releasing the tail end. Tighten by adjusting the tail and working yarn.

Both techniques are effective, It’s about finding your preferred way of creating a slip knot. Once mastered, the slip knot becomes the foundation for all your crochet or knitting projects. Keep practicing and experimenting to find which method suits you best.
